Training /  Threes - Attacking short on the volley (60 mins)

    • Description:

      In this routine, all players are hitting rotating drives with the option of playing a volley drop at any time. The next player must then hit a straight drive to continue the rally. 5 minutes per side.

    • Exercise Notes:This exercise serves as a warm up, as well as the chance to start practising and thinking about the straight volley drop.

    • Minutes on exercise:10:00

    • Description:

      The player at the back hits a straight drop, the player at the front tries to lob the ball to the player at the back. The player in the middle tries to volley drop. 2 minutes in each position, then switch sides.

    • Exercise Notes:The focus should be on the person in the middle practising hitting a high quality volley drop, with the other players working around the middle player.

    • Minutes on exercise:12:00

    • Description:

      In this routine, players hit rotating drives with the option of playing a volley drop at any time. The next player must then hit a counter drop, followed by the volleyer playing a straight drive to continue the rally. 5 minutes per side.

    • Exercise Notes:In this exercise, players must hit high quality volley drops. If the shot is not good enough, a solid counter drop becomes easier to play, which can resulting in the volleyer losing control of the rally.

    • Description:

      In this routine, all players are hitting rotating drives with the option of playing a cross court nick at any time. The next player must then hit a cross court lob to continue the rally. 5 minutes per side.

    • Exercise Notes:In this exercise, players should look for good opportunities to attack the nick after a weak drive has been played. Focus on the technical aspects of the shot, specifically coming around the side of the ball not over the top of it.

    • Description:

      In this condition game, one player is playing against the other two players, who have to move and be disciplined together to work effectively. Each player has a turn at playing the other two and will score one game to 11 before rotating.

    • Exercise Notes:In this game, the pairs should be concentrating on when they can play both the volley drop and cross court nick as they should have more time on the ball, while the solo player works on defending these shots and looking for his own opportunities.
