Training /  Pairs - Attacking short on the volley (60 mins)

    • Description:

In this routine, all players hit rotating drives. For this session, add the option of playing a volley drop at any time, from where the next player must then hit a straight drive to continue the rally. 5 minutes per side.

    • Exercise Notes:This exercise serves as a warm up, as well as the chance to start practising and thinking about the straight volley drop.

    • Minutes on exercise:10:00

    • Description:

The player at the front of the court feeds the person behind with a lob so he can play a straight volley drop. Make sure to mix the height and pace of your feeds. 3 minutes in each position per side.

    • Exercise Notes:In this exercise, players must be very aware of their racket face and follow through in order to hit accurate volley drops. Be aware that shorter backswings often make the shot easier to play.

    • Minutes on exercise:12:00

    • Description:

In this condition game, both players can only play to a length, however they have the option of taking the ball short with a straight volley drop. Play one game to 11.

    • Exercise Notes:In this game, players should focus on moving correctly onto the volley so they are balanced and stable while playing the drops. Early racket preparation is the key to finding success with the straight volley drop.

    • Minutes on exercise:8:00

    • Description:

Players are feeding each other with a cross court for any type of attacking short volley. Mix the height and pace of your feed so the volleyer can practice dealing with different balls. 4 minutes per side.

    • Exercise Notes:In this exercise, players should feel free to express themselves with the attacks; try not to overly focus on technique and let the swing flow freely. Use the time in practice to experiment!

    • Minutes on exercise:8:00

    • Description:

In this condition game, both players can only play shots above the service line, unless they hit a volley, which can be hit anywhere. Play one or two games to 11 to finish the session.

    • Exercise Notes:In this game, players should be hunting the volley as much as possible and trying to expose their opponent at the front of the court with attacking volleys. Try to implement everything that you've practised during the session!
