Technique Recap

  1. Nice relaxed grip between thumb & forefinger.
  2. The remaining 3 fingers supporting the grip.
  3. Butt of the racket running through the outer corner of the palm.
  4. V aligned with the inside line of the racket neck.
  5. Skin between the point of the V should be away & off of the handle itself.
  6. Index finger should sit away from 3 supporting fingers as if a trigger finger.

3 Common Mistakes To Avoid With The Grip

Holding the racket like a tennis racket with an even 4 finger grip

✔ The squash finger grip differs from a tennis grip in that it is neither a flat, tight or full hand grip on the racket. It requires the racket to be largely held & controlled by your thumb & forefinger with the remaining three fingers supporting the racket grip, as the butt of the racket rests in your hand.

✔ As you grip the racket, your index finger should sit slightly away from your three supporting fingers, poised almost as if to pull a trigger. This will allow you the space & dexterity to guide the racket using your thumb & forefinger with ease.

  • Correct way to hold the squash racket palm of hand

Holding the racket with the butt resting in the centre of your palm

✔ The butt of the racket should sit on the hard fleshy part of the bottom outside corner of your hand below your little finger, as David illustrates in the image above.

✔ Not through the centre of your bottom palm as is the most common mistake.

  • Holding the grip too tight with your V point touching the handle

Holding the grip too tight with your V point touching the handle

✔ Holding the racket correctly should create a V shape between your thumb & forefinger as pictured above.

✔ As you hold the racket’s grip, the bottom point of the V should be aligned with the inside line of the racket’s neck so that your hand sits slightly over the top of the grip.

✔ There should be a space between the web of skin at the point of the V & the racket, the V point shouldn't be touching the handle itself to give you the space to manoeuvre the racket more freely.

I'm writing to tell you how grateful I am, you've really helped me so much. I live in Rio de Janeiro and started playing squash in 2014. I started in category 5 (the worst here is 6). Since then I check the website almost every day searching for something to improve my game and now, after an year and a half, I'm going into category 2!
