    This video helped me understand why I was losing my balance on my backhand side and my back foot had to go past my lunging foot to stop myself. It's because the knee of my lunging foot was going past the foot. BTW, Jethro's demonstration of the correct lunge uses a 90 degree angle in each leg, not 45 degrees.
