It’s always fascinating hearing the experiences of an elite level player at the top of his game, and Paul is particularly interesting to listen to due to the extreme heights to which he’s taken the physical side of the game – his athletic feats earning him the fitting moniker of ‘Superman’!
Whatever level you play at however, lessons can be taken from Paul to further your own game. Something he touches on that is especially relevant to many club level players, is how improving your fitness and athleticism should be channelled positively into getting onto the ball early and attacking your opponent, and not just chasing and retrieving the ball.
To complement some of Paul’s great insights in his video, check out our ‘Put it into Practice’ sessions below. Our new solo session concentrates on some of the themes he discusses around developing a shorter, quicker swing, while our pairs session takes this further and brings in an additional focus on getting onto the ball more rapidly. Finally, our brand new physical session focuses on speed into the front of the court, to help you develop the attributes necessary to emulate Paul’s outstanding counter-attacking ability.
Put it into practice
This session is built around a selection of simple solo drills, designed to help you get more comfortable using a shorter, faster swing when the speed of the game dictates.
This pairs session works through a series of drill progressions expanding on some of Paul’s philosophies of counter-attacking and applying pressure through speed onto the ball.
Structuring a physical session around improving your squash-specific speed isn’t just about the drills you use, but also the parameters of work duration, rest period length, and amount of sets completed. This session has been specifically designed with this in mind, to help maximise the development of your speed into the front corners of the court.
Beetroot is a vegetable that’s packed with benefits and which can potentially boost athletic performance. It’s also a great source of antioxidants, proven to lower blood pressure, improve general blood flow, and help reduce the risk of heart disease.
In this exclusive documentary, we delve inside the mind of Paul Coll, focusing on Paul’s physical and mental strength and what it takes to be a rising star at the top of the squash game.
In this series, Lee Drew explores when and how to shorten the swing. He focuses on the benefits of shortening the swing in the front and middle of the court, volleying across the middle and defending in the back court.
Let us know how you get on with the sessions, we’d love to hear your feedback!
